Fashion manufacturer bugatti Holding Brinkmann has a positive outlook

2013 result stable - expansion of sales areas gathers momentum

Herford. bugatti Holding Brinkmann GmbH & Co. KG, performed well in 2013 in a generally declining market.¹ Despite the difficult environment, the company succeeded in maintaining an almost stable result. The Herford-based fashion manufacturer was able to focus even more strongly on the brand. This commitment was rewarded by the market.

"The European sovereign debt crisis rendered the economic conditions unfavourable for an export-oriented company such as bugatti. However, the current indications are that in 2014 we can expand in all segments", report joint executive partners, Wolfgang and Klaus Brinkmann, who are looking ahead optimistically to the future.

In the financial year 2013 the group generated revenue of 212.5 million euro (not including income from licences), which represents a drop of three percent compared with the previous year´s revenue.

One reason for this development is the economic situation in Italy, which is primarily responsible for the decline in export sales from 46 percent in 2012 to a nonetheless high level of 45 percent in 2013. Italy is still the main export country for the Herford group, followed by the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

The weather in 2013 also influenced sales and had a negative effect on the purchasing mood of consumers. There was a reduced demand in both summer and winter for jackets and coats.

Some of the decline in sales can be accounted for by the setting of a new strategic direction and this set-back had been anticipated. bugatti had, therefore, very largely relinquished its private label business in order to strengthen the brand and had also withdrawn its Kaiser Design brand form the market.

The company has a total of 4,000 employees worldwide. In Germany there are 935 employees of which 48 are apprentices.

The bugatti core brand showed increased sales in 2013, in particular in knitwear/jersey, shirts and trousers. The development of the new women´s fashion section is very gratifying. 2013 saw a successful entry into the German as well as the international market and the course is set for growth.

Internationalisation has made further progress. bugatti has also had a presence in the USA since 2013: The newly-opened shops in New York and Boston are running successfully. The US American market offers great brand potential that the fashion manufacturer wishes to exploit by expanding sales areas.

bugatti will further reinforce its commitment to retail trade. The basis for this is the newly-developed store concept including forward-looking store design. bugatti, in collaboration with its partners, is implementing stores through a franchise concept. A partner from Qatar is starting things off by working with bugatti to implement two store projects this year in Saudi Arabia. The label currently has over 24 stores and around 300 shop-in-shops worldwide.

bugatti has been able to considerably reinforce brand recognition and image, so that brand recognition by men currently stands at 77 per cent. Results document the successful route to becoming a lifestyle brand.

The consistent growth and development of licensee sales is also very satisfactory. Shoes are doing particularly well and have become one of Germany´s top brands.

2013 was another successful year for Wilvorst. Sales figures were clearly positive. The company consolidated its position as market leader for men´s formal dress wear. The Atelier Torino and Corpus Line Brands have both made a positive forecast for 2014.

The Eduard Dressler Brand ended 2013 in a position of growth. The label has again increased its market share in Germany. DAKS, under licence to Dressler, achieved a par sales revenue result in 2013 and all the signs are pointing to growth for 2014. For strategic reasons, the licence agreement with the AIGNER brand was not renewed at the end of 2013.

2013 was a very successful year for the Pikeur and Eskadron brands. Sales bucked the trend by maintaining a high level. Eskadron´s development has been particularly gratifying: The equestrian equipment brand noted that 2013 was the most successful year since the firm was established in 1977.
