Wolfgang Brinkmann turns 70

Businessman and show jumper from Herford

Wolfgang Brinkmann will be celebrating his 70th birthday on 23 May 2020. As the son of the clothing business owner Friedrich-Wilhelm Brinkmann, who turned a one-man-operation into one of Germany's largest clothing companies (annual turnover in 2019: 212 million euros, generated by the brands bugatti, Wilvorst, Eduard Dressler, Pikeur and Eskadron, for example), he has always focused primarily on his work for the family's business. His other main interest is his passion for equestrian sports – which he inherited from his mother.

His horse riding
For Wolfgang Brinkmann, horse riding is more than a hobby: the high point of his amateur equestrian sports career was winning the team gold medal in showjumping at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with his horse bugatti Pedro. After the Games, he was awarded the Fair-Play-Trophy by UNESCO and Verband Deutscher Sportjournalisten e.V., the German sports journalists' association. Wolfgang Brinkmann has been the president of the Deutscher Reiter- und Fahrerverband, the German equestrian and carriage driving association, since 1990 (interrupted only by a brief spell as its honorary chairman). Alongside his work as the owner of a fashion company, Wolfgang Brinkmann has also concentrated on training his sons in his equestrian sport, as well as training horses for showjumping, since 1998. Animal welfare is also very important to him. He aims to train the horses up to the international equestrian sports level. He officially retired from competing in 2001. Instead, his sons Thorsten and Markus still actively compete in horse riding tournaments. Markus, who trains at his father's equestrian facilities in Herford-Laar, participated in the World Cup finals in Omaha/USA (2017) and belongs to Germany's extended Olympic showjumping squad.

His job
Wolfgang Brinkmann joined the family business in 1976, his brother Klaus Brinkmann in 1981. As managing partners of bugatti Holding Brinkmann, they are the second generation of the family to run the fashion company with plenty of passion together with the third generation, too, their sons Markus and Julius.

In 2011, company managers Wolfgang and Klaus Brinkmann were voted "Businesspeople of the Year" by the local association of banks, Bankenvereinigung Bielefeld, and "Die Familienunternehmer-ASU e.V."; they were awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in April 2013.

Wolfgang Brinkmann has also been the committed vice president of the regional textile and clothing industry association "Verband der Nordwestdeutschen Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie", the deputy chairman of the advisory council of local employers' association "Arbeitgeberverband Herford" and a member of the "Deutsche Bank" advisory council for many years.

The fashion industry is currently facing many difficulties resulting from coronavirus. "We have never experienced anything like this, and it remains a huge challenge. We will make every effort to help our company to successfully weather this crisis," says company manager Wolfgang Brinkmann.

He will therefore be celebrating his special day only with his close family. His brother Klaus, by the way, also has reason to celebrate. He is exactly two years to the day younger than his brother.
