The history behind Valentine’s Day dates back to the third century. In the Italian region of Umbria, people were talking about bishop Valentine of Terni, who contravened the Roman laws of the time by marrying couples in accordance with Christian tradition. When he refused to abandon his faith and put a stop to his actions, Emperor Claudius had him executed.
Rumour has it that Saint Valentine was executed on 14 February, which is why this date has since become so special to couples in his memory.

According to tradition, women are supposed to buy chocolate for their loved ones on 14 February. The amount and quality of the chocolate are crucial factors here. A month later on 14 March, it’s time for the men to return the favour and offer gifts of white chocolate to the ladies. A popular tradition for anyone with a sweet tooth!
Finland
Valentine’s Day in Finland is more than just a day for couples and those in love. It is more commonly considered a day of friendship on which people also buy small tokens of appreciation for their friends. Flowers and hand-written cards are popular choices in this regard.
England
England’s Valentine’s Day traditions date back to the 16th century when the English writer, Samuel Pepys, is said to have surprised his wife with flowers and poetry on 14 February. This remains a popular combination of gifts to this day and even young people put a great deal of thought into turning their partners’ heads with romantic words.
