Guide, Specials & Season
The beginnings of Bermuda shorts
It's not just the look of the Bermuda shorts that reminds us of our last summer vacation, their history also stands for the flair and attitude to life that the trousers still exude today.
As the name suggests, Bermuda shorts come from the Bermuda Islands, which are famous for more than just the Bermuda Triangle. They offer everything the discerning vacationer could wish for: plenty of sun, turquoise water and absolute nonchalance.
In the 18th century, the Bermuda Islands became one of the most important locations for the Royal Navy. However, the heat was too much for the dapper Brits, so they opted for a lighter version of the naval uniform.
This included the first Bermuda shorts, which are still a real fashion basic on the islands today.
Fashion facts about Bermuda shorts
For a pair of shorts to be considered Bermuda Shorts shorts, a few things need to be taken into account:
Real Bermuda shorts end approx. 5 cm above the knees.
There should be a maximum of 2 finger-widths of space between the shorts and the leg so that the Bermuda shorts retain their classic shape.
The most popular colors are beige, navy and grey, but unusual color combinations and patterns are also okay if the rest of the outfit matches.
Shoes and socks with shorts
What goes best with our favorite summer shorts? Unless you're at the swimming pool, it's best to avoid sandals or flip-flops. Instead, opt for a pair of smart sneakers or light fabric shoes. Low-top sneakers in particular, i.e. sneakers with a low shaft, always go well with summery pants. Should you wear socks with sneakers and Bermuda shorts or not?
Visible socks are an absolute no-go for Bermuda shorts.
If shoes without socks are too unhygienic for you, you should opt for socks and make sure that they are not visible.
On what occasions can you wear shorts?
There are also many ways to combine Bermuda shorts in the office. If the dress code is generally more casual, it is usually not a problem to wear shorts to the office on hot days. For business appointments or business dress codes, however, you should refrain from wearing shorts. To avoid sweating in your suit on hot days, we recommend light chinos. They'll make a cool impression even in the hottest weather ;)
In your free time, the combination of shorts and T-shirt always looks casual and dressed up. For parties and birthdays, you should still ask your host about the dress code and, if in doubt, opt for long trousers.
The supreme discipline - combining Bermuda shorts and a jacket
You can easily recreate the casual look, but combining a jacket with Bermuda shorts is something for the really brave. The outfit quickly looks overdone and inappropriate.
But the combination of casual Bermuda shorts and an elegant jacket is totally on trend! That's why we're showing you THE styling tips for the "summer suit" here:
Bermuda shorts in muted colors and without eye-catching patterns go best with the smart casual look.
Tone on tone - Dark blue trousers look particularly good with a matching jacket and a light blue shirt.
Go for a casual sports jacket so as not to disrupt the relaxed flair of your outfit.
Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer.
