Perfect Match – Shirt Fit and Cuts

Everyone knows them, everyone loves them and they always go down well: We're talking about men's shirts.

If you think that you only need to pay attention to the color and pattern when choosing a shirt, you're wrong, because only a perfectly fitting shirt will accentuate your assets and conceal minor problem areas at the same time. So that you don't have to rack your brains on your next shopping trip, we'll give you everything you need to know about shirt fit and cuts so that your next shirt is a "perfect match"!

The shirt can look back not only on an eventful history, but above all on a long one. Starting out as a simple outer garment, the shirt first developed into a pure undershirt, which only came to the fore again in the 16th century. With a button placket along the entire length of the garment, the shirt was easy to put on and take off again.

The foundation stone of today's shirt had been laid and has faithfully accompanied us through all fashion eras ever since.

How can you recognize a high-quality men's shirt?

To avoid disillusionment after just a few weeks of buying a shirt, you should pay attention to these important quality features in advance when it comes to shirts cut and fit:

  • Take a closer look at the fabric of the shirt. A high-quality men's shirt is made from at least 90% cotton.

  • If the percentage is lower, the shirt will not only quickly look third-rate, but will also lose its breathability.

  • Even a layman can quickly recognize whether the seams are narrow or wide. In the latter case, this indicates a cheaper finish.

  • The back of a shirt must always be longer than the front. Why? So that the shirt does not slip out of your trousers when you bend over or make large movements.

  • Shirts produced at low prices usually do not have a split back yoke. The horizontal seam is responsible for a good fit in the chest area.

  • If you want to wear cufflinks, take them with you when you try on your favorite jacket. Then you can immediately see whether the sleeve length suits you.

What fits are there and which one is right for you?

To ensure that a shirt suits your body type, there are a wide variety of shirt fits and cuts. We present the four most common shapes and explain who they are suitable for.

Regular fit - the loose shirt for everyone

The shirt in the regular fit style stands for a wide and comfortable range of movement. Thanks to the loose cut, the shirt also fits more corpulent men and always cuts a good figure.

Super Slim - the shirt for sportsmen and athletes

So that the well-trained man can also cut a good figure at work, there is a special fit for the athlete's body. The cut of the shirt is wider at the shoulders, arms and chest than other fits and therefore offers enough freedom of movement without being tight. The cut tapers towards the waist.

Slim fit - the fitted shirt

The slim fit shirt is the closest relative of the super slim cut. Here too, the focus is on a narrower waist, but without assuming a broad chest. In short: the shirt that suits anyone with a slim build.

Modern Fit - the all-rounder

The Modern Fit cut also focuses on a slimmer silhouette, but is more forgiving of smaller problem areas as it is not as close to the body as its fitted predecessors.

The weaves
Small details with a big effect

You may never have noticed, but shirts also come in different weaves.

To help you understand the different terms on your next shopping trip, we'll give you a brief overview of the most common weaves.

Poplin

The most commonly used weave in the shirts sector is poplin. Thanks to its fine structure, the fabric is particularly breathable, but sometimes appears slightly transparent in light colors.

Oxford

Small diamonds and basket weave: the Oxford style is not only robust, but also particularly comfortable to wear against the skin.

Herringbone

The herringbone pattern is one of the best-known weaves. The alternating "herringbone" gives the fabric a sophisticated look. This fabric is particularly opaque.

Twill

Twill fabric is characterized by a diagonal weave and a particularly dense weave. You probably know it best as denim, but it also makes shirts something very special.
