There are no limits to creativity with this fall trend. To help you keep track, we present the hottest check patterns and how to best showcase them.
The ABCs of Check Patterns
Check patterns no longer have to be seen as something old-fashioned or associated with school uniforms. The pattern suits everyone and works for the office, casual wear, or evenings. New cuts and different textures create a casual and modern look for any outfit. The color variety of check patterns is well known, but are you familiar with the terms "Vichy," "Glencheck," or "Pepita"? We'll explain it to you and present our favorite must-haves for winter 2025/26.
Fashion history of the check pattern - A short excursion
Even before the Scots, the first check patterns were worn in the Far East, and they were spot on. Later, the inhabitants of the Highlands took advantage of this trend and still dress in their clan colors today. Fortunately, in today's fashion, we don't have to worry about offending anyone and can enjoy checkered fashion in all its facets. Whether it's checked trousers with a knit sweater, a checked blazer with a basic T-shirt, or a chic checked coat with jeans and sneakers – you're absolutely on the right track with the check trend this winter. Have you found your favorite outfit yet?
GINGHAM CHECK – THE FASHION TREND FROM THE 1950S CELEBRATES ITS COMEBACK
Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn, Alain Delon, and David Hemmings captivated us with Vichy check 60 years ago, and the classic check pattern continues to inspire designers today. The base color is usually white, making it a fantastic choice for combining with striking tones. Only at second glance do you discover other colors in the square patterns: The blend of colors breaks up the otherwise blocky shape, giving it an elegant and timeless touch. We love wearing Vichy for casual occasions and pairing the pattern with bright shoes and bags. An outfit that already has us dreaming of spring!
If the Vichy pattern immediately reminded you of Munich's Oktoberfest, you're right on the mark. Bavarian traditional costume primarily features Vichy-style blouses and shirts!
THE HOUNDSTOOTH PATTERN – THE CHECK HIT FOR YEARS
What used to be mostly found only in men's wardrobes is now a must-have in every closet. Houndstooth gets its name from the broken checks in a jagged pattern, reminiscent of rooster claw marks. Those who prefer something more conventional can opt for the classic black and white combination. For the bold, houndstooth is also available in bright colors that will make your outfit a real eye-catcher. Especially for festive events, houndstooth is always a good choice. Just make sure the colors match the occasion. Want to learn more about houndstooth? Then check out our article on it!
GLENCHECK – TRADITIONAL CHECKS FOR MEN'S AND WOMEN'S FASHION
Everyone knows the pattern, but few can name it: The Glen Check pattern is once again this year's hottest pattern for coats, shirts, jackets, and suits. The typically "British look" is created by the alternating weave and is available in several colors. The contrasting colors combine to create a unique pattern that's easy to combine. Dark leather shoes or shiny lace-up shoes really showcase the Glen Check suit. For women, checked blazers are particularly well-suited to minimalist, solid-colored dresses or trousers.
Combined with another check pattern, it's no longer called a Glencheck pattern, but rather a "Prince of Wales Check." We are very amused!
PEPITA – PATTERN WITH SPANISH FLAIR
In addition to the Scots, we also owe one of the most popular check patterns to the Spanish: Named after the Spanish dancer Josefa de la Olivia, the pepita pattern resembles the classic houndstooth. Usually black and white, the pattern consists of small checks connected diagonally. The size of the checks is important: checks smaller than one centimeter are referred to as pepita. Coats, jackets, and blazers in the pepita look are real eye-catchers and our style tip for winter 2025/26!
Want to go all plaid à la Lady Gaga? Instead of planning an entire plaid-style outfit, focus on individual accessories and items of clothing. Not sure if plaid suits you? Then start small and pair a plaid accessory with your favorite outfit.
Accessories in check – stylish eye-catchers for every outfit
Checks don't just look great on jackets, coats, and suits. For example, try a chic glen check tie to spice up an elegant business suit. Or how about a houndstooth handbag? Play with the many colors and possibilities offered by checks.
Our tip: A checkered umbrella, scarf, hat, or phone case add stylish accents and can be highlighted as a little eye-catcher. It'll instantly put you in a good mood.
Our conclusion on the check trend for autumn and winter 2025/26
Even after all these years, we still love the check trend. In fall and winter 2025/26, it opens up countless possibilities and offers us a unique and confident look.
