Materials for windbreakers
Manufacturers use a variety of materials for functional jackets like windbreakers. Synthetic fibers such as nylon and blended fabrics with a water-repellent coating, also known as a DWR (durable water-repellent coating), are common. Some jackets are made with a blend of merino wool. This ensures increased comfort and a better climate inside the jacket. Depending on the manufacturer, special technologies are used to make the material even more dirt-repellent and also simplify care.
Advantages and areas of use: When should you wear a windbreaker?
A windbreaker jacket is also a fashion statement in urban areas in fall and spring for those who enjoy a sporty and active look. They're ideal for outdoor activities on windy fall and spring days in moderate temperatures. They're always there when you need quick and, above all, uncomplicated weather protection. Hardshell jackets can't offer this level of comfort because they're too bulky and heavy.
But when it gets cold and stormy, they're not a good choice. Most windbreakers have only the bare minimum of zippers and drawstrings, and the hood isn't stiffened. In really cold and bad weather, the windbreaker reaches its limits.
Although windproof jackets are primarily used in fall and winter, they can essentially be worn year-round. They're just as popular worn directly over your running gear for mountain runs in summer as they are in winter as one of several layers.
A windbreaker is ideal for trail running, road cycling, jogging, or hiking. Some people even wear the lightweight jacket over a warm fleece sweater while skiing on sunny days to protect themselves from the cold wind. They are popular for fast-paced outdoor activities where flexibility and light weight are required.
What do windbreakers have to do and where are their limits?
Windbreakers offer temporary protection from wind and weather. Very few models feature a wide range of functional technologies. As a result, these lightweight jackets aren't suitable for outings in persistent rain or cold, persistently windy conditions. Another thing to consider is that windbreakers aren't very durable and can easily be damaged by contact with rocks or rough sports.
Care and washing: How to keep windbreakers intact for a long time
Proper care for your windbreaker depends largely on the material used. First and foremost, follow the manufacturer's instructions. However, there are a few tips you should keep in mind:
- Liquid detergent is better than powder because the particles it contains can close the pores of breathable fabric.
- Fabric softener is taboo because it also impairs breathability.
- Friction damages fabrics. A gentle cycle or hand washing is a better choice.
- Waterproof after washing!
If you follow these guidelines, you should enjoy your windbreaker for a long time.
